Ingredients

350g all purpose flour
1 tbsp ground ginger
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp bicarbonate of soda
170g unsalted butter
150g brown sugar
4 tbsp golden syrup
Glace Icing:
100g icing sugar
Juice of 1 lemon, divided
Edible food colouring
Edible silver balls
There is nothing better than making your own edible gifts for your friends. What's more, you can custom design these gingerbread people to suit the character of the recipient. Everyone can join in the fun of making these spiced sweet treats. Have sweet joy this festive season!

Instructions

1.Sift the flour, ginger, cinnamon and bicarbonate of soda into a mixing bowl.
2.Place butter, sugar and golden syrup into a large saucepan . Melt very gently over low heat.
3.Remove pan from heat and add all sieved ingredients. Mix well with a wooden spoon to make a firm dough. Leave to cool.
4.Turn out onto your work surface and knead gently to form a ball. Wrap in cling film and chill for about 30 minutes.
5.Preheat oven to 180 deg C. Line baking trays with baking paper.
6.Remove dough from fridge, unwrap and roll out onto a lightly floured surface until 5mm thick. Dip your favourite biscuit cutters into flour and cut out shapes. Transfer carefully to the prepared trays.
7.Gather up trimmings, re roll and cut out more shapes. Arrange on baking tray, slightly apart.
8.Bake for 8 to 10 mintutes until light brown. Remove from oven and cool completely on cooling rack. You can keep the cookies in an airtight container until ready to decorate the next day.
9.For glace icing, sift icing sugar into a clean bowl. Add lemon juice one teaspoon at a time, to make a thick icing for piping. Divide into 3 - 4 small bowls. Add food colouring of your choice to each bowl, stir till colour is uniform.
10.Transfer icing to separate piping bags, one for each colour. Pipe designs onto the gingerbread cookies. Use No. 2 nozzle for finer lines. Use No.7 nozzle for round dots like eyes and buttons.
11.Allow icing to set. Then wrap in plastic packets, and tie up with colourful ribbons. Consume within 1 week.
